Colin Powell has always had left leaning views on social issues like abortion and affirmative action. Although I don't think it is a black thing, it's certainly no surprise to me knowing his stance on the issues. He has never been very conservative and he is in favor of the liberal activist, legislate from the bench type judges that Obama intends to appoint.

Yeah, I guess I knew that part of the reason he left the Bush administration was because he wasn't as far right as the rest, but I never really knew much about his specific leanings on various issues. So for me, someone who has only started to "get into" politics (a.k.a. actually be educated about all the issues) since the start of this election, it was a little surprising! :)

Not to downplay the endorsement at all, but I did read that it's possible that he waited so long to endorse Obama because he wanted to wait to see if it looked like he was going to win first. And then he said that he's "in no way interested in returning to government" but would consider any offers made by the next president. So he could be vying for a position, but who knows. I do like Colin Powell a lot, and the endorsement did stir me a little, as I've been planning on voting for McCain. It's certainly not as clear cut for me as I hoped it would be.
