dependence

This is one of the most thought provoking and well written articles I've read in a while.

I like it when people write like they're real people.

Oh, and as a side bar, my sister is seriously one of the funniest people I've ever met. So is Kevin.

A story for the glory of your morning.......

Today at work:

Jeff IMs Becki and asks what she's doing for lunch.

Jeff doesn't know that Craig has already come over and asked Becki if she'd like to accompany the art peeps to lunch.

Becki replies, "Oh, sorry, Taylor, Craig, Clint and Julie (fellow co-workers) and I already have lunch plans. Maybe another day."

Jeff says, "Fine. Have a nice lunch. IN HADES!!!!!!!!"

Becki says, "The hug monster is coming over to see you."

Becki starts loping stupidly over to Jeff's desk to employ "the hug monster." On the way, she realizes in mid lope that she is losing her balance and her shoes, which have been worn down from walking on concrete a lot with them, probably aren't the best for loping across the office.

The truth of this realization hits her while her knees and palms are simultaneously hitting the cement floor in front of Jeff's desk.

Moral of the story: Never employ the "hug monster" via loping whilst wearing patent leather shoes with absolutely no grip on an industrial concrete floor.

something about which to think

Since the dawn of time (or since he played the six fingered man in "A Princess Bride") I have loved and ever will continue to love anything Christopher Guest does.

big words

I love this blog!

And don't worry, I had to look it up, too. (This applies to everyone except Greg, Kevin and Eric, who know what every word means, ever)

1. pres·ti·dig·i·ta·tion [pres-ti-dij-i-tey-shuhn]
n.
a. Performance of or skill in performing magic or conjuring tricks with the hands; sleight of hand.
b. A show of skill or deceitful cleverness.

2. pres‧ti‧dig‧i‧ta‧tion
n.
a. sleight of hand; legerdemain.

AND AGAIN (I can presume a definition using context clues - Thanks Mrs. Kluter! - and it's synonymous relation to "sleight of hand," but let's check anyway):

leg‧er‧de‧main  [lej-er-duh-meyn]
n.
a. sleight of hand.
b. trickery; deception.
c. any artful trick.

microbial genetics

I'm sitting at Café Studio right now with Kevin, and he's studying for his chemistry test that he's taking tomorrow morning and I'm sitting next to him surfing around on the proverbial "net." You know, like the net in the proverb.

It's pretty neat for a couple of reasons. One, I like to read this blog called "dooce.com," where the blogger, Heather Armstrong's website became famous because she blogged about her job and it got her fired. Her website became so popular that it enabled her husband to stop working because the ads on the site pay for.....well, they pay for everything in their lives and their daughter's, essentially. Pretty neat.

So anyway, sometimes when I read her blog, I kind of imagine little clips of her life where it's afternoon, and there's a lot of natural light in the house, and she's drinking something out of a mug (probably coffee, but I don't like coffee, so I always hope it's something else) and she's sitting indian style on her couch, and her husband is sitting next to her, either playing with their daughter or eating or working on his blog, or any number of things, and it just seems so warm and peaceful.

I know it's not always like that, and life isn't always like that and that our days can't all be like that, nor should they, necessarily. But it still feels warm. And I'm not even drinking anything out of a mug. And sitting here next to Kevin while he's manifesting his genius on notecards and college ruled paper and I'm recording my thoughts on this here technology machine just feels nice. And I love him. And God is so good. And life is so nice. And it's these little moments that can make a bad day not seem so bad, and life not seem so exhausting.

those pesky cells made out of stems!

I've recently started reading this website because I noticed that it's awesome. A few days ago they posted this:

If you're in the mood (see: if you're NOT an emotional desert) to read an article about it, check this out.

Pretty good to know, eh?

phare's fair!

Here's a photographic depiction of......

"The Day our Boss Let 2/3 of our Employees go to the Fair!"

Jeffrey of Mustardbrook Farm (he seems competent to run our creative department, doesn't he?):

Crazy Mouse 1 - Clint & Julie:

1. My favorite thing about this picture is how Clint appears to have retreated into a child-like state of uncontrollable glee. Can anyone say Christmas morning?

Crazy Mouse 2 - Jeff, me & Craig:

1. I like how Jeff appears to be some sort of evil Crazy Mouse Grand Master, finding the plight of all who ride this ride to be most amusing!
2. I didn't know I could open my mouth this wide, nor did it FEEL like I was opening my mouth this wide at any point during the ride.
3. Craig screamed really loudly a number of times, "THIS IS NOT A RIDE FOR CHILDREEEEEEEN!"

Oh, good times at the fair. Seriously, though. We all wanted to ride The Crazy Mouse because we thought it would be funny to ride a cute little kid ride, but it was NOT the sweet, innocent time we thought it would be. We were all screaming and laughing ceaselessly throughout the ride - mostly screaming. IT WAS CRAZY! IT WAS A CRAZY MOUSE RIDE!!!

The only things I regret about the fair were not getting that delicious corn on the cob I wanted to get, and not getting our boss a t-shirt with our pictures on it saying "We Love Grandpa!"

alls I gots is time...

This is a travesty. I know this might be a mildly controversial issue, but we need to talk about the definition of Classic Rock.

To me, and I know there might be people who disagree, but Classic Rock is a PERIOD SPECIFIC genre of music. The specific period it encompasses is the 60s and 70s of the 1900 persuasion. It does not evolve like "Oldies" inevitably will.

Clarification:

CLASSIC ROCK -
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
The Who
Pink Floyd
Queen
Allman Brothers, etc.

NOT CLASSIC ROCK -
Stone Temple Pilots
REM
U2
Guns N' Roses
Bon Jovi

Don't get me wrong, I like U2. That doesn't make them Classic Rock. 92.5, I'm disappointed in you.

olympics, chicago 2016

A friend of mine who was a designer at my work and moved to Chicago early this year to work for another design agency just showed me his newest design, the freaking Olympics 2016 logo for Chicago!!

I'm so proud of him, isn't this great!!?!?!

Come back to Dallas, Kyle!!

The Olympics are always fun for me! My most favorite Olympic events are as follows:

SUMMER:
gymnastics (women mostly, what with their grace and all)
pole vault
swimming
diving

WINTER:
ski jump
snow boarding
ice skating
luge

I love the Olympics!!! I love the opening ceremonies, and it reminds me of sitting at home with the family and watching them and feeling an overwhelming sense of pride for our country as well as a feeling of global unity. Yes, it is a competition, but almost the whole world is gathered together! It's a really warm, fire in the fireplace, afgan, hot cocoa (assuming we're talking about the winter olympics, mind yous), glad to be a part of this big world kind of feeling.

And then after all the gymnastics/ice skating competitions are over and I inevitably (and horribly detatched from reality) start trying to replicate their moves in my living room and find myself quickly out of breath, I sometimes I wonder if I should have chosen volleyball over the honors math class it conflicted with.

big, big tex

Today is going to be our first ever "annual, morale/team building work fair day (except 2 of our employees aren't allowed to go)," and we're about to leave in a few minutes. We were worried about the possibility of a rain-check....literally, because of the glorious rain that fell for hours this morning, but it has stopped and should remain stopped for the rest of the day. Plus the temperature is actually below 5,000º F, so we felt that getting out of the office was a necessity.

Thanks to our Dr. Pepper cans and the subsequently reduced admission, hopefully within a few hours I'll have stuffed one of these into my pale, pale face:

Thank you, Texas.

my life's justification

Finally! The masses agree!!!
